Writer & Communications Strategist
Hey, I’m Tarah. I’m a writer and communications strategist with more than 14 years of experience writing and developing communications strategy for nonprofits, brands, and government agencies.
My speciality is translating complicated ideas and topics into people-first, plain language content that moves people to action.
As both a writer and a communications strategist, I understand the strategy behind your campaigns and I create content and messages that connect with your audiences and your goals.
Creative Writing
In addition to my work with clients, I write flash fiction, short stories, and poetry. I’m also working on a sci-fi novel.
My creative writing often explores themes of identity, grief, nature, and being human in a technology obsessed world. Though this changes. I tend to follow the words wherever they take me.
Scribbles Newsletter
Scribbles is my monthly newsletter where I write about being human in a world increasingly optimized for technology use.
If you’re a subscriber, you’ll note I’m not anti-technology, but I’ve spent much of my career working with technology and experiencing its effects. In particular, social media, and most recently, working as a writer during the ascendence of artificial intelligence and large language models.
These experiences–coupled with my abiding belief in the necessity for a deep life–inform my reflections and the ideas I wrestle with in Scribbles.
Subscribers to Scribbles will also find snippets of my creative writing, places for connection and joy, and book reviews and recommendations. Which brings me to…
The Pulitzer Prize Reading Project
A few years ago, I decided to read all of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction/Novel awarded books in order, from the beginning. I write a reflection on each book and share it in the Scribbles newsletter.
The reading project started after I read (and loved) Swamplandia! and realized there was an entire list of good fiction waiting to be added to my TBR. Thus, a reading challenge was born, and it’s been a very enriching project so far.
If you want to join me and follow along, subscribe to Scribbles and check out the entire list of Pulitzer Prize winners: list for novel (1918-1947) and list for fiction (1948-present).
A Bit More Personal
I live in Silver Spring, Maryland with my husband and our Great Dane, Merlin.
I’m a former competitive swimmer turned horseback rider. These days I still swim laps, but most evenings you’ll find me at the farm where I keep my retired racehorse, Gator. Many of my writing pieces start in my head here, frantically scribbled in notebooks or note apps.
I start my mornings with too much coffee and close the evenings with a good book. I believe in the magic of everyday moments and that love ultimately wins the day.
P.S. In case you’re wondering, Merlin does believe that he’s the reincarnated famous wizard.
